FAQs FOR MS. KAREN
WHAT CURRICULUM DO YOU USE?
I am a firm believer that a cookie cutter curriculum does not meet the needs of individual students. I draw from my experience and musical knowledge, mentors, and also constantly research new methods in order to tailor each lesson to the needs of my students. I use aural training, movement, theory, singing games, composition, visual aids, improvisation, instruments, transcription, and elements from many different teaching methods, primarily Kodály, as I prepare a lesson plan
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN STUDYING MUSIC?
I have been performing and studying music since I was a young girl. My father has taught elementary music up to high school band since before I was born, so I was surrounded by music during childhood. His influence aided in my training in music and theory. Specifically, I learned music with the Kodaly method - and yes, my Dad was my teacher! Additionally, I graduated from Weber State University with a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance in 2021.
HOW WOULD SOMEONE WHO WORKS WITH YOU DESCRIBE YOU?
I once had a coworker describe me as Giselle from the Disney movie, Enchanted, when I teach young kids. I was so flattered! I believe people, children especially, can feel the love you have for a subject by the way you teach it and the enthusiasm you bring to a lesson.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO PURSUE MUSIC?
I love bringing people together to feel uplifted and share laughter. I can do this every single time I sing, and it is exhilarating! The joy and connection others feel through music has motivated me to find my voice and share it.
WHAT VOCAL/MUSIC TEACHING EXPERIENCE HAVE YOU HAD?
My first experience teaching music/singing was in High School, about 2012. I had the opportunity to teach a middle school choir for a month and prepare them for a concert. I was the guest conductor for the piece they learned under my direction. Although I was terrified and definitely felt underqualified, it sparked in me a love of teaching. While I earned my degree in Vocal Performance from Weber State University, I opened my own private voice studio and taught from my living room. That was in 2019. I also have spent over 5 years teaching music to children weekly at my church. That is one of my favorite gigs that I still do! Now, I am just so excited to teach both private lessons and group singing classes at this professional studio.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO TEACH AT ElevE ARTS ACADEMY?
My kiddos and I fell in love with Elevé the fall of 2024 when they took their first classes here. The space is beautiful, the teachers are loving and talented, and the director is full of light. Elevé offers non-competition dance classes, including ballet. This is a perfect fit for my family! When Jeneca reached out to current students, asking for interest in voice classes, I responded immediately offering to teach. Who wouldn’t want to be part of such an incredible group of artist-educators?
Elevé is pleased to present our new offerings of music and vocal training classes. Each of these classes teaches music fundamentals and vocal performance in a group setting. These classes are great for kids looking to learn more about music as well as those pursuing musical theater. Like Elevé’s dance classes, our new music classes are based in technical training, while encouraging creative skills in an encouraging and positive environment.
Private lessons are also available on request. Email info@eleveacademy.com to set up your lesson today!
